Which bluestone should I purchase?

Which Bluestone should I purchase?

Bluestone is one of the most popular natural stone tiles and it is always a matter of confusion which one to choose when there are so many available. To help you make a better decision I have picked up three best bluestone tiles among numerous variety. Based on my research, I found the following three bluestones to be the perfect choice for your outdoor pavers or pool pavers as they are of really good quality and very reasonable in price.

European Bluestone

European bluestone tiles come with beautiful consistency in the surface, unlike other bluestone tiles. As the name suggests they are exported from Europe and these days they are gaining popularity in Australia because of its aesthetic light greyish finish which looks astonishing around the swimming pool surroundings. Remember, they do contain catspaws on the surface. Cat's Paw is a series of small pits which is naturally formed in bluestone. Many architects and designers purposefully seek out as much cat's paw as possible as it is commonly perceived as a natural feature that people like to show off. However, they have a really high non-slippery rating which makes them an ideal choice for outdoor pavers and especially for pool paving.

If you are tiling for a commercial project or around a pool, we would strongly recommend EUROPEAN Bluestone instead or other types of bluestones especially Chinese Bluestone (Slightly Cheaper and inferior).

Harkaway Bluestone

Harkaway bluestone is also a good choice if you are looking for a little darker charcoal greyish tiles as your pavers. They are beautiful and quite popular in Australia. A very common choice of Australian Homeowners, landscapers, and Architects. Unlike European, there will be naturally occurring Cat's Paw featured on each paver, varying from none to 10% only of each individual pavers surface area. They are naturally very strong and durable with proper maintenance can last for decades. As compared to European they are slightly expensive. However, with no doubts, a perfect choice for outdoor pavers, pool pavers, garden sitting areas, and patios. You can also choose matching pool coping tiles to complement the look of the pavers.

If you are looking for tiles that look similar to the Harkaway but are darker, with a high non-slip rating then I would highly recommend midnight blue. It is by far the best and cheapest alternative to bluestone tiles and pavers. They are generally a darker blueish grey in color and look stunning upon installation. I personally love the natural surface of these blue stone tiles as it gives a more natural look and feel to the surroundings. The best thing is, it is cheaper than the above two bluestone tiles and does not come with catspaws.

The type of Bluestone selected will vary on the application. I have listed below the basic rules on thickness and then I will go into the varieties:

10mm - 12mm thick tiles can only be layed onto a concrete slab.

15mm - 20mm thick pavers can be layed as above BUT also onto a crushed rock base compacted and with a wet mix slurry of sand and cement on top.(we recommend painting the back of each paver with a mix of bondcrete and neat cement powder prior to bedding into the slurry)

30mm thick pavers can be layed as per above and also onto a crushed rock base compacted and then into a level sand bed.(least recommended as sinkage can occur and weeds certainly will pop up).
